A Trip to Charleston

Hello!

Well, there is nothing like spending half of last week feeling sick to thwart my plans for getting this post published. I really wanted to tell you how much fun we had in Charleston last week instead of two weeks ago, but better late than never, I suppose. I hope you have all been well and are enjoying the first days of Fall--my favorite season!

So we finally went on vacation, and boy did we ever need it. We needed the change of scenery, change of pace and time away from our daily obligations and responsibilities. It was not a long get-away--just three days--but it was three days of no schedules, no driving, no chores, no errands, no phone calls, no emails, no cooking and no cleaning. In other words, it was glorious.

We fell in love with Charleston. Like head-over-heels-think-about-it-every-day in love. It has been on our list of cities to visit for a while and since it is only a two hour plane ride from Houston, we figured it was the perfect place to travel to for a short jaunt without spending an entire day in airports and airplanes. Each day, we walked around the city with no plans and no agenda--just a map, a camera and a lot of curiosity. After doing some research before our trip, we decided not to rent a car, which was the best decision because Charleston is a walking city. We walked the main avenues filled with shops, art galleries and restaurants and meandered the quiet, sun dappled cobblestone back streets lined with beautifully restored historic homes. It took a lot of restraint not to run to the nearest real estate office.

We lucked out the days we were in town because it was Restaurant Week, so the local restaurants were all offering special menus for the occasion. We loved every restaurant we went to. The only hard part was knowing we were only in town for three days and not being able to go to all of them! I found a local cooking store called Charleston Cooks where I did some shopping {naturally} and even attended a cooking demonstration on Lowcountry cooking, which was fun and very delicious. I ate grits for the first time! I know...what rock have I been living under?! And look whose cookbook was prominently displayed in the store! Hi, Virginia!

I loved returning to the East Coast. The East Coast will always be home for me, but I also have come to love the South, and in Charleston, I got the best of both worlds. I was especially excited to finally visit the Lowcountry and I left wanting to learn everything I can about this beautiful and unique geographic area of our country. We are already planning a trip back to Charleston in the Spring and I cannot wait.

I hope you enjoy this photo tour! Links to the restaurants and shops we visited are listed at the end of this post.

I'm so glad you two had such a great trip! We went to the OBX last summer and I realized just how ignorant I've been to how beautiful that part of the country is. I would love to visit Charleston!
