Blackberry Buttermilk Cake

I read this post on Joy The Baker this morning. It was just what I needed to read because I seem to constantly struggle with what to write about in this space. I am one of the out-of-the-box-thinking challenged people of the world so I always need a little guidance and Joy's post delivered.
I always feel like it's wrong not to have a story to attach to a recipe I want to share here, and that's probably why I'm frequently getting stuck for something to write. Which then leads me to procrastinate writing a blog post, which then makes me frustrated, which then leads me to eating chocolate all day. It seems like all the other blogs I read have witty and engaging stories to accompany their recipes and I often feel like I can't keep up with the warp-speed pace of the blogging world.
Joy's post taught me that it's perfectly OK not to have a story for every blog post. You can write a how-to post, give unsolicited advice, tell people about what's inspiring you, share a diary entry {preferably of an embarrassing or funny moment}, or write a list.
After reading her post, I was like, "Duh. Why didn't I think of doing these things before?" I love lists {Lord, how I love lists!}, I love giving unsolicited advice {but not the obnoxious kind}, I love teaching people how to do something in the kitchen. It turns out I have a cache of potential blog posts sitting around in my brain waiting to be written. Plus, in my three short years of blogging, I've learned that it's always good to change up your writing style and content presentation to keep things fresh and interesting. I printed out Joy's post and am keeping it on my desk as a reminder for those times when I think I have nothing to write about. Because the truth is, there is always something to write about.
Next Tuesday, I am leaving for a four-day girls trip to Utah with my best friend, Francesca, so this is the last post until I get back. We're going all out and staying at a posh resort, sharing a room together, hiking Zion National Park, getting massages at the spa, lounging by the pool and maybe have a few cocktails to toast all the beautiful things and people in our lives. It's going to be like a high-end slumber party and I can't wait. I need the break and a change of scenery. And I love being with my best friend.
So today there is no story {except for the one I just told you about in the above five paragraphs}. There is only this Blackberry Buttermilk Cake that I made to celebrate my birthday last Sunday. You can find the recipe here.
I'll be re-capping my trip with a new "The Side Dish" post when I get back. Buon Appetito!
Love,
Flavia

What a gorgeous cake!
I was inspired by Joy's post too. Giving unsolicited advice is my hobby! lol
